What Is The Unconscious & Conscious Mind?

When discussing the unconscious and the conscious mind, we frequently use Freud's analogy of an iceberg.

Our conscious mind is narrated as the tip of the iceberg above the water, which only accounts for a tiny part of the whole thing, roughly 10%. In contrast, the rest of the massive iceberg base below the water is our unconscious mind, which remains unseen and deep-rooted.

The conscious mind includes our conscious awareness, such as:

  • Logical and critical thinking, like reading this article now, assimilating it, and making sense of it

  • Our willpower to set goals and accomplish the task at hand

  • Short-term memory, such as recalling what we have to do during the meeting

  • Our desire from wanting to drink some water right now to buy a car or a house in the near future.

The unconscious mind includes:

  • Beliefs and values like you don't even know why you keep waiting for your crush to call because you believe only the boys should take the initiative.

  • Emotions and feelings that you aren't cognizant of when you are feeling lonely and bored and distract yourself with binge-watching your favorite TV show and a tub of ice cream.

  • Habits such as you aren't conscious about grabbing a coffee cup before you grab your toothbrush right after you wake up.

  • Imagination and creativity, such as when you are daydreaming.

  • Intuition is when you have a strong sense of knowing what to do but don't know why.

  • Bodily functions include not being aware of breathing when working at your desk.

  • Long-term memory, like you can't comprehend why you are anxious at the moment when it is totally safe, but it's the person you are conversing with who reminded you of your teacher who always picked on you when you were young.

You may have used your willpower to be confident in front of this person, but you still feel ineffably anxious. You may also try to convince yourself to stop eating one tub of ice cream every night but in vain.

It may work briefly, but the process is extremely tiring and likely to rebound.

You can imagine even though we make our conscious mind 100% functioning, it still only accounts for 10% of our human mind!

We know that our willpower and rationality have their place in our life. And we also know that while optimizing our conscious mind, we can maximize 90% of our human mind, i.e., the unconscious mind.

Now, you may understand why clients are coming in to get an “upgrade” of our powerful unconscious minds through hypnotherapy.
